Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'New Era' for NYC in Inaugural Speech

On his inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” New York City, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his tenure.

The 34-year-old figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
