French authorities to begin stopping migrant vessels in Channel after UK pressure

French officials have consented to begin stopping migrant vessels in the English Channel, after an extended period of pressure from the United Kingdom.

This policy shift comes after the British leader wrote to the President urging him to support the plan and stating there presently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.

French security forces will be allowed to stop the small boats at sea, but only before they've picked up their passengers, according to authoritative statements.

French authorities have rarely intervened to prevent the heavily loaded boats leaving the shoreline because it is viewed as too great a danger to both officers and civilians.

"It is essential that we implement these tactics this month... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel."

Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson says personnel will begin taking action at sea, with the objective of protecting human life.

Notably, the official ruled out the use of nets to stop boats, which had previously been reported as a possible technique to disable the engines of the boats.

The decision to intervene at all is a major advancement, coming after a brief shift towards a stricter strategy this warmer season, which dropped off when the previous Interior Minister left office.

That was highlighted in the summer month, in the run-up to a summit between the UK leader and French president, when authorities were witnessed walking into the sea to damage the hulls of a vessel.

Now French authorities will once more be permitted to intercept boats before they pick up asylum-seeking passengers from the beaches of France's north coast, however it's not clear how the vessels will be stopped.

Strong winds are presently delaying the start of intervention operations and the human trafficking gangs will be seeking ways to adapt to avoid interception, as they have done so often in the previous instances.

The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for comment.
