At least 13 individuals lose their lives and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
